One Night Stand at Madison Square Garden

No, I'm not insinuating that one should go home with a Knick and forget to leave their phone number. The return of Axwell, Ingrosso and Angello to New York is going to a world-saving event, taking place in the same venue as artists like Jay-Z, U2, Britney Spears and Paul McCartney.

This is big. Swedish House Mafia, the holy trinity of house, are set to be the first ever electronic music group to play the iconic Garden, colloquially known as "The World's Most Famous Arena" (according to Wikipedia, and I always trust them). Their announcement was made last week on their teaser site www.230911.com in typical sneaky SHM fashion. Of course, if this is the first you're hearing about it, it sucks to be you because it sold out this morning. If you weren't lucky enough to get a ticket, you can at the very least turn this music up:

Coldplay Vs Swedish House Mafia - Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (live) by officialswedishhousemafia

This show could mean a lot for house music, which is already garnering a lot of media with the not-so-underground crowd. As the official teaser states: "The magic of this is while the scene is the biggest its ever been, it's still the best kept secret in the world. Yes sure, so many of the world's greatest electronic producers are now on daytime radio 'across the globe' [...] but the beating heart of the scene...the dancefloor, is still one for the brave of heart and the true of soul."

Honestly, how can you disagree with that?

And in case you forgot just what they're capable of, here's what happened a couple weeks ago when they took over for the notorious Pete Tong on BBC1 for the Essential Selection:

We come. We rave. We love.

summer lovin' happened so fast

Well kids, today is my least favorite day of the entire year: the autumnal equinox. While the rest of New York goes boot shopping and sips pumpkin lattes, I sit home denying the end of all things summer and refusing to wear pants. This summer was a particularly good one, especially for house music. A friend of mine dubbed it the "summer of Alesso," and I think I'll let that stick.

Alesso has become a fixture in the music scene by instating himself as the adopted younger brother of Swedish House Mafia. Man, do they love this kid. And it's hard not to. The baby Swede is only 18 and he's already dropping hits like these:

Alesso - NILLIONAIRE by Alesso

DEVolution – Good Love (Alesso Remix) *Preview* by Alesso

LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem (Alesso Remix) by Alesso

And if you missed him at Ezoo, here's what he can do in the dj booth:

The Summer of Alesso may have come to an end, but I think the man himself is here to stay. So get into it, while I work on getting into this sweater without breaking down into tears. Summer days, driftin away... but oh those summer niiiiiightsss.... sigh. xxx.

The Wait Is Over: KASKADE Essential Mix

After theorizing for the past couple years about what was stopping Pete Tong from bringing the (debatably) best DJ in America on his Essential Mix show (perhaps a deep-seated feud between the colonies and the love of the queen?), we decided that perhaps it was because such a thing might cause the world to spontaneously combust. This Friday, we were happily proven wrong. The world's still here, and made a bit more glorious with the addition of two hours of the best progressive house music the world has to offer. Get into it:

And, Ryan Raddon, thank you for existing. xxx.

EZOO: what you missed

Three days of nonstop dancing wreaked havoc on my body but did quite the opposite for my music collection. I made it to almost every artist I wanted to experience, and they all lived up to expectation, but there were definitely a few surprises.

My greatest fear at any music festival is that I will end up being subjected to remixes of the same 3-5 songs throughout the entire weekend. My friends and I managed to count 9 separate instances of "We Are Your Friends," which was surprisingly higher than "Save the World," which was my initial bet to be Most Overplayed. So naturally, my favorite DJs were the ones who stuck to their own guns and only borrowed when absolutely necessary. A notable favorite in this category was Bart B More, whose set I could only unfortunately find 5 minutes of:

The biggest surprise was Markus Schulz and Gareth Emery converting me to a full-on trance fan. My life-changing moment occurred at 27 minutes into this set when Schulz during a ground-shattering Fatboy Slim remix:

Finding myself at the Sunday School tent was not on my to do list, but I'm glad I didn't miss this amazing set from Dutchman Joris Voorn and UK's Nic Fanciulli, who tore it up:

Another big surprise came to me only yesterday, when I discovered that the mind-blowing set from Martin Solveig was not in fact the tennis-racket-wielding Frenchman himself, but a substitute set from Dirty South due to Solveig's last minute injury. Dancing to Dirty South three times in one weekend is not a bad way to go, and here's why:

You can find most of the Electric Zoo sets over at mixing.dj by searching. I could probably spend another entire weekend talking about this past weekend, but I think these should be enough to tide me over until the fall lineups start rolling in. I'm already looking at Kaskade and Deadmau5 in October... Don't stop dancing, kids.

recovery mode

I totally get now why they call it the electric ZOO. Overall, an unforgettable, glorious and incredibly exhausting 3 days. At some point I am going to find my favorite sets and post them, because there were quite a few I'd love to relive.

In the meantime, relax to this:

EZOO PLAYLIST Part 3: Sunday Funday

Sunday's got a pretty ridiculous lineup, if not the best of the weekend. It's also the only day that I actually have some seriously tough decisions to make (namely Hardwell vs. Calvin Harris).

The day begins on a perfect note with Alesso. The next big thing from Sweden, Alesso is following the same path Avicii did a year ago, and my bet is that next year he will not be playing at 1:15pm but closer to 9pm. Anyway, this is the tune of the summer, so if you hear nothing else, hear this:
Pressure (Alesso Remix Edit) - Nadia Ali, Starkillers & Alex Kenji by medallo

And he just dropped a new track with Sebastian Ingrosso:
Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso - Calling (FULL) by kevinkellerman

Up next is John Dahlback, yet another Swede. (Sidenote: was anyone else aware that H&M is also Swedish? Everything is Swedish. You learn this when you start spending a lot of time with Swedish people. They are actually taking over the world.) Like most Swedish things, he's also awesome:
Jovicii featuring Andy P - Don't Hold Back (John Dahlback & AVICII Original Mix) by WePLAY Music & Management

Then at 3:30 is Hardwell, who I've wanted to see live for AGES, but overlaps with Calvin, who holds a very special place in my heart. Decisions, decisions. You may remember Hardwell from his smashing collabo with Tiesto, Zero 76. His new jam is also pretty big:
Hardwell - The World by HARDWELL

Calvin. Oh, Calvin, it's no wonder you get all the girls. Calvin Harris's sound has grown up a lot since the days when he created disco. This one is sure to put a smile on your face, although the video makes the song feel less cute and a little more creepy:

After Calvin, head back to the Hilltop Arena for FAKE BLOOD. A longtime fave, Fake Blood has been dropping lots of heavy tracks lately, like this one:
DEEP RED EP Teaser by Fake Blood

Truth be told, I've always loved him much more for his remixes, like this baby:
Miike Snow - Animal (Fake Blood Remix) by mikeyboom

Next up, Jack Beats. Now some of you may wonder who is Jack Beats and what is it that they do? And some of you may correct me because that's not one of their songs. But this is, and it's pretty dang good:
All Night ft. John B by Jack Beats

Almost last and definitely not least is Afrojack. There's not much to say about him except that he has a song called "Pacha on Acid" so you know he is pretty serious.
08. Afrojack, Bobby Burns - Ghettoblaster (Original Mix) by DJ LachyM

Finally, you can all hate me if you want, but I'm foregoing Armin for Boys Noize, because let's face it, he's just more fun.
09 Chemical Brothers - Swoon(Boys Noize Summer Mix) by partymax
Just remember to fall in love, there's nothing else.

Alright everyone - time to put on the neon. Have a great weekend and stay safe! xxx.

EZOO PLAYLIST Part 2: sweaty Saturday sounds

Saturday's forecast: 83 degrees, clear, and sweaty.

Day two of Electric Zoo jumps off for me with Sidney Samson, the man behind 2010's epic "Riverside," which will forever inspire me to scream out an expletive while driving between LA and San Diego (for reasons other than Orange County traffic). This dirty Dutchman's last single is only slightly less rude:
Shut Up Let It Go (Sidney Samson feat Lady Bee) by Bonecrusher

Porter Robinson's up next in the Red Bull Riverside tent. I'm pretty excited to see him again, because anyone who can remix Avicii and not ruin Avicii gets a thumbs up from me:
Tim Berg - Seek Bromance (Porter Robinson Remix) by Porter Robinson
Lady Gaga - The Edge of Glory (Porter Robinson Remix) by Porter Robinson

I'm not the world's biggest Skrillex fan, but I'd pop by his stage on the off chance he may play this little gem (remixed by none other than the love of my life, Kaskade).
Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites (Kaskade remix) by Skrillex

After Skrillex at the Hilltop Arena comes Dirty South, who oddly enough is not from the likes of Tennessee or Georgia, but a Serb based in Melbourne, Australia. I'm certainly not judging, because since "Phazing" he's stayed pretty close to my heart. His latest jam with Thomas Gold is so fantastic it may even be able to reawaken the dead, so don't play it near any cemeteries:
Dirty South & Thomas Gold feat. Kate Elsworth 'Alive' (Pete Tong: Essential New Tune) by Thomas Gold
Not to mention they'll be playing together with another favorite up-and-comer, Alesso at the Pacha afterparty Saturday night. If you can only make one afterparty, this is the one not to miss.

Ahh, the G the U the E the T T the A-A-A-A, we don't play. David Guetta is the headliner I am honestly least excited for (his sets continually disappoint me, including New Year's on Bondi Beach in Sydney, and that's a pretty hard to show to ruin). However, I'm a longtime Snoop Dogg fan, and this song makes me ... well, I'll let you guess.
Snoop Dogg & David Guetta - Wet by AndresEGB

As far as trance goes, I can only handle so much, but ATB has always been spot on for me. His last album Distant Earth was absolutely lovely.
ATB feat. JanSoon - Move On (Club Version) by chockski

Joachim Garraud will be invading (ha, ha) the Red Bull Riverside tent at 8:45, so we can catch him before either catching Ferry Corsten or the ferry home.
Joachim Garraud-Wake Up People(Cosme Martin and Christian Vila Official Remix) by Christian Vila

Ferry Corsten is another trance DJ who "gets" me. Plus, his songs usually describe how I feel about them, especially "Beautiful." This one is...
Ferry Corsten - So Good by ferry-corsten

Thus Saturday ends on a trance-y note, and picks back up again with Alesso, Thomas Gold and Dirty South. See you there!

EZOO PLAYLIST Part 1: gotta get down on FRIDAY

Yea, yea, yea. I've been slacking. Sorry kids. But to make up for it, I'm helping everyone prepare for a blowout labor day weekend at electric zoo. Don't worry if you're not attending, Pacha is throwing some pretty decent afterparties as well. And I know you all love Pacha.

Friday is going to be an early day, thanks to Fareoh, who is kicking off the weekend at 11am at the Hilltop Arena. He's our "little Avicii," and we love his new track:

Buy My Love (Fareoh Remix) by DirtyMexicanLemonade.com

And unfortunately this one's not on soundcloud, but cannot be missed:

Then at 1:30 we're gonna kick this party into gear with Felguk, the Brazilian duo that brought us one of my favorite pregame songs ever:
Felguk feat. Sporty-O - 2nite by felguk

Followed by Max Vangeli & AN21, who are kind of like peanut butter and jelly... pretty delicious separately, but together they're unstoppable.
Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed (AN21 & Max Vangeli remix) by AN21
And we all remember how I felt about their Gorillaz remix.

Next stop is Bart B More, who killed it at Pacha back in January with Dada Life. My favorite of his is this very dirty remix of Miike Snow:
Miike Snow Black & Blue (Bart B More Bootleg) by P.J.

And even though I know he will never, ever, ever, ever play California Dreaming, I will always have a special spot in my heart for Benny Benassi. I hope he at least plays this jam:
Love Get Out Of My Way (Benny Benassi Remix) by Monarchy

If you missed Martin Solveig's adorable tennis-infused mini-series, you may have at least caught his essential mix this year.
Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette - Can't Stop (The Faidox Project Remix) by The Faidox Project

Friday's headliner is none other than TIESTO. Tiesto is one of those DJs that you expect to be a letdown because he's so freaking famous, but then you see him and you're reminded WHY he's the number one DJ ever. Yes, ever. I said it. If you're not following his Club Life podcast, you should be. You also may have missed this:

SO if you'd like to dance with me, here's where I'll be all weekend:

Avicii: this girl's Swede dreams

Recently billed as "the next Kaskade" by Pacha (and that just might be true), it's easy to say Avicii holds a special spot in my heart. If you were lucky enough to catch him at Pacha NYC last night (or at the Music Box in LA on Friday, for all my west-coasters), you already know everything I'm about to tell you.

It seems that Sweden is taking over everything from our furniture to our literature, and this sultan of sound, dictator of dance, emperor of electronic, otherwise known as Tim Berg, is no exception. So put on some comfy shoes and get ready to dance:

Avicii - Penguin - Club Mix by Ministry of Sound
Avicii - ID by zocalo
Sweet Dreams (Avicii Swede Dreams Mix) - Avicii by Nymphony Rec
Robyn – Hang With Me (Avicii Remix) by themfreshbeats
Armin Van Buuren ft. Laura V - Drowning (Avicii's Mix) .Mp3 by DJ skyLine
Adele - Rolling In The Deep (Avicii Meets Philgood Saturday Mix) by DJ X-78
SEBASTIAN DRUMS & AVICII - My Feelings For You by Ed Smoove
Avicii - Street Dancer (Original Mix) by SoundLogik

And if you've got the itch that only the Swedes can scratch, get into his essential mix from last December. Love, love, and more love. xxx.

turn up the love now: new SHM

Yes. You read that correctly. New Swedish House Mafia dropped on Pete Tong's show last Friday and if you weren't listening live, here is what you missed:

Swedish House Mafia – Save The World (Original Mix) [Radio Rip] by JustDoHits

And on that same note, don't miss mafia member Axwell's latest, but be warned: this one may cause tears to be shed. One might even say it's the house music equivalent of The Notebook.

Axwell - Heart Is King by axwellofficial

Now, somebody please tell me these Swedes are Electric Zoo-bound this September... xxx.

Game, Set, Match

If you've left your house in the past year, you've probably heard a rendition of Martin Solveig's "Hello," featuring Dragonette. The masterpiece is just the first of the many things to love about the Parisian, not least of which is this little gem I stumbled upon yesterday.

Combining two of my favorite things in the world - house music and tennis - is Martin Solveig's webseries SMASH. There's a lot to love here: the Wes Anderson-esque film style, Martin Solveig in general, his hilarious manager, and guest appearances by none other than Bob Sinclar and Novak Djokovic. Oh, and French subtitles. Episode 1 is below:

Dragonette appears herself in later episodes, along with Melanie Laurent (of Inglorious Basterds fame). She plays a Japanese chick. Uhhh... just watch it.

And since we're on the subject, the whole thing is one big promo for his upcoming album release of Smash. The third video serves as a sort of (adorable) behind-the-scenes for the making of the Ready 2 Go video. The song is pretty dance-worthy and features Kele of Bloc Party. Listen below:
Ready 2 Go feat. Kele (Single edit) by martinsolveig

And in case you missed his pre-Hello collabo with Dragonette, this is a tune worth noting:
Boys & Girls feat. Dragonette (Extended edit) by martinsolveig

So, you know, get into it! xxx.

guns don't kill people... laser cartoons do

Jamaican dancehall duo Major Lazer, comprised of Diplo and Switch, has moved on from making NSFW music videos of extreme-humping to - you guessed it! (or did you?) - CARTOONS!

Don't know about you, but I for one am looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

here we go, another night out

America's very own KASKADE* has just released an epic remix of his already epic hit, "Move for me." Dropped at Ultra and now available for download on SoundCloud. The song literally gives me chills. Get into it:

Kaskade & Deadmau5 VS. Michael Woods - Move For First Aid - Kaskade Mash Up by Kaskade

*(my iPhone's autocorrect actually puts his name in all caps whenever I type it, because it knows me so well)

Also, if, like me, you were unable to attend Ultra in person, the entire Kaskade set is available for download here.

But fear not, New Yorkers, Kaskade will be here this Saturday, 4/9 at Pacha, so you can enjoy the Illinoisian's earth-shattering, soul-crushing beats and dance your heart out soon enough!

Enjoy! xxx.

People I like: Chris Lake

According to pal Deadmau5, Chris Lake has a big head. Strange thing to say coming from someone who regularly wears a giant mouse-shaped ball on theirs, but hey, if you make this music this good, you should have a big head. (According to Wikipedia, it measures 36" x 22". I've never measured a head, so I don't know if this is actually abnormal.)

Anyway, hailing from the UK (just please say "English," he doesn't like admitting his Scottish roots...), is Chris Lake. And I like him, particularly these tunes, including his recent essential contender:

Chris Lake - Secrets in the Dark - BBC R1 Essential Contender by chrislake
Chris Lake & Michael Woods - Dominos by chrislake
CHRIS LAKE - SLEEPWALKER [ORIGINAL MIX - PREVIEW] by chrislake

Another Dutch DJ you should add to your list: Hardwell. You've probably heard "Move It 2 the Drum" among others of his tracks, but he's picking up speed on my favorites list after his remix of Haley's "Physical" and of course, his recent track with Tiesto (Zero 76, find it here).

Q: What do you call a happy accountant?

A: C.P.YAY!

DJ C.P.YAY!, that is. If you're lucky enough to have come into contact with my dear friend James Bohan, (also known fondly as my Wildcard, or just Jimbo), then you've experienced a night out as it should be done properly. Everything this kid touches turns to fun, and music is no exception. If you've seen him in Vegas, you'd never believe he daylights as an accountant, but that hasn't stopped him from getting his hands dirty in the LA house music scene.

He also runs a record label with fellow DJ Paul Loeb, check out more at www.noegorecords.com.

l'amour pour le lundi

I'm feeling francais today, and thought i'd share a few of my faves.

First up is my girl Ladyhawke avec "Paris s'enflamme," of which you may have heard the English version. The French version is better. Ecoutez:

I first heard Yelle in a hotel room in Bordeaux, and it took me another year to find out who the heck the girl was, but I'm so glad I did. Here's the video that introduced me... (PS - the title translates to "I want to see you..." and "dans un film pornagraphique" I think you can figure out.)

Brazilian duo The Twelves remixed another of her songs, also worth a listen:
Yelle - Ce Jeu (The Twelves Remix) by DjAbag

Stromae (who is actually Belgian, go figure) released a lovely little tune called "Alors on danse," which has been remixed every which way. There's an awesome mash-up out there with Justice's "D.A.N.C.E." which I unfortunately couldn't seem to find, BUT a close second would be this little mix avec Kanye ici:

Kanye West - Alors On Danse by The Hotel Specialist

And I just came across a danceable remix of one of my favorite old French classics "Moi Lolita" by Alizee.

Supersoaker - Moi lolita by HAMMAHOUSE

Mr Oizo, music producer and film director (known mostly for his 1999 "Flat Beat" and his work with Uffie, who rocks my socks off) is another French fave:

Mr OIZO - POSITIF by Issac1127

And if you're still craving that je ne sais quoi du francais... Here's a couple more:

In-Grid - Tu es Foutu by automaticdruggie
Sexy Sushi - Sex Appeal by klozetkapagi

Bon appetit, mes amis! xxx.

TIK TOK: let the countdown to bob sinclar @ Pacha tonight begin!

New Yorkers, are you ready to feel the love generation? World, hold on, Bob is on his way. His recent track featuring reggae artist Sean Paul is pretty dance-worthy. Most of Bob's music is designed to take you to some far away sunny place where everyone is smiling and loving each other. Unfortunately, us New Yorkers are stuck in the rain.

At the same time as Bob's kumbaya-everyone-loves-everyone-style music is what made him famous, the man knows how to drop a dirty beat. Check out The Bob Sinclar show for more.

Laidback Luke is ready to explode

2 days ago I woke up on a plane to the Laidback Luke EM from Radio 1 Weekend 2009 in Ibiza and let me tell you, if you have to go straight into work after a redeye, that mix (get it here) is a pretty good way to wake up.

Of course, little did I know Pete Tong had another surprise waiting for me: the Dutch detonation* released another essential mix on my birthday. Thanks LBL for a fantastic 2 hour birthday explosion.*

ready for the weekend

The best birthday present a girl could ask for? To be serenaded by a lovable Scottish singer-songwriter/DJ/producer on a beach somewhere tropical.

Well, this is close enough - the one and only Calvin Harris will be performing this weekend in my beautiful hometown of San Diego at 4th & B. The beach is only a few blocks away. Pretty close to perfect way to celebrate my birthday. And I know Calvin's got love for me, cause I was born in the 80's, the 80's.
